The Tamejavi Festival recognizes the traditions, struggles, and contributions of the Central Valley's immigrants.
Through this cultural exchange and artistic expression, Central Valley communities join voices and create new bonds, thus forming a solid sense of place and establishing foundations for greater and more active civic participation.
The Tamejavi Festival is a project of the Pan Valley Institute of the American Friends Service Committee.
Artists participating in the festival will express themselves though their art and share the social significance of their dances, chants, music, poetry and traditional instruments.
The Tamejavi Film Series will screen films rarely shown in mainstream theaters or festivals and that are from a new wave of cinema - films produced by first generation Americans who tell stories related to their heritage.
Festival attendees will delight their palate with the diverse tastes of new Central Valley cuisine. Coffee lovers will also enjoy international coffee flavors presented by Cafe Corazon. A new addition to this year's Outdoor Marketplace is the Our Voices, Our Stories Circle, a space in which festival organizers will display works of art and narrate their migration and integration journey.
This year's festival will feature a poetry corner where locally and nationally-renowned poets will share their poetry in an intimate space.
Platicas provide a space for opening dialogues focused on current affairs. Topics to be explored include the importance of the preservation of a person's mother tongue and the social impact of losing that language as well as the economic importance of small and sustainable farming. An intergenerational dialogue will also be held as a part of this year's platicas.
The Fresno Art Museum will hold its monthly "Family Days" at the Bonner Education and Activity Center where children and parents will have the opportunity to play and learn together.
